"Miss Razorclaw~! How excellent to see you again. I confess, I was worried when you didn't come back last time. How was your trip to Far Atishayokti?"

Gillian soon spots what Janma called "The Strength", a stone fortress squatting over all three of the rivers as they meet, running into the Great Aavali. Flags flutter in the wind above it, emblazoned with arms, hands, and boats.
There's a crash behind her, and a crowd of dingy sailors roll out from a nearby pub, singing at the top of their lungs and sloshing mugs of cloudy beer.
"Oh, to be on the Greaaaaaat Aavali~~!~~!~~! To feel the wiiiiiiiiiiind in my haaaair~!" They bellow. Dirty looking children gallop around the drunks, singing along and laughing uproariously.
One of them points a mug at Gillian, sluicing beer onto the dusty street and smiling widely. "C'cmon then! You look like a likely one! Join us? For a drink anna song?"

They part to make room for her in their mob of carousers. Someone hands her a large mug of cloudy beer, which she begins drinking from with gusto. The crew work to teach her the songs they've been singing, mostly Sphurana classics like "Great Aavali", "My Girl's Left Me For a Man In The League", "Don't Tell The Church, No No No No," "Barge Pirates Aren't Friends", and "We've got those No-Vrishni Blues".
Whenever her mug is empty, a new one is pushed into her hands by a face from the crowd. She knows they told her their names. Names like "Ol' Manshu", "River Iggy", and the like. They stride through the Dockside District, through alleys, around warehouses, past the new textile mills. The world begins to spin as Gillian downs mug after mug. The kids, too. They aren't drinking, are they?? But they're dancing around, in and out and between everyone, laughing and singing and spinning between everyone. Wait are they spinning??? Someone hands Gillian another drink. No, no, the street is spinning. Wow. Woooooo. The spinning gets worse, and then she's hit the ground and everything seems very far away.

It looks like they decided that the Rimedead Armor was too heavy to steal, and you can't steal Life-Water Wings out of people. So she has those.

Already plotting revenge, she makes her way out of the alley, walking a few blocks to regain her bearings before heading back to the bar. It's a dingy hole-in-the-wall kind of place called "Riverman's Regret". It's interior is crowded with small round tables, all in need of a healthy scrubbing. There aren't a lot of people around, mostly sailors and fishermen trying to catch a few drinks before working through the afternoon.
The bar is run by a portly human with very little hair on his head and a greasy expression on his face. One of the patrons at the bar ducks his head away hurriedly when he notices Gillian's entrance. The barman smiles nervously. "Howdy howdy howdy! What brings you here today? I'm afraid we uh, don't serve no Pashubi drinks here. Can't get the ingredients, y'see."

Still more scents, all of them variations on sweat and dust, braid up the street to her left, back toward the crush of the merchant's districts.
Gillian has options. Given these smells proximity to Iggy's stench, it's likely they're mixed up in this, but she has no way of telling who (if anyone) has what. What's she gonna do?

She hears the water lapping against the brick canal-bank, and quieter, the sounds of laughter from inside the warehouse. Laughter, punctuated by loud SMASHES.

The inside of the warehouse is filled with bundles of boxes on an variety of wooden platforms, with the whole thing lit by a series of hanging lanterns that spread pools of light across the warehouse's floor.
The laughter is coming from a group of grubby-looking children who seem to be having a GRAND time. The splintered remains of smashed boxes line the floor. Two of the children are taking turns pushing boxes off the wooden platforms and SMASHING them with the larger-than-them metal Walruses they're holding. Further back, almost entirely in shadow, a pair of adults lean against the warehouse wall, conversing and occasionally smacking any of the kids who stray too close.

Unfortunately, the glass somewhat mucked her trajectory, so rather than landing in a fury of claws and teeth, she slams into the adult on the left head-first, knocking the wind out of him and slamming him against the wall. The other adult swears and leaps away, landing along the wall horizontally. Gillian notices her Shoes of the Webbed Palace on his feet. The now-horizontally suspended man fumbles and pulls out a long knife from his belt.
"Hey!" A high-pitched voice squeaks from behind Gillian. "Take THIS!"
Gillian is smashed against the floor by a familiar metallic Walrus-Weight, taking light damage. Laughter spread among the kids again now, louder this time.
"Hit it again!"
"Yeah! Smash it!"

Behind Gillian, the adult she headbutted chokes back a gasp and tackles her from behind, sending the two of them crashing into the still-teetering body of the girl. The three of them go down in a heap of living and dead flesh.
The Webbed-Shoe wearing goon, still standing on the wall, vomits and holds his knife up, shaking in fear.

The Lifewater wings reform, and begin to soothe Gillian's wounds, providing light healing as they spring into action.

From the warehouse, it's a short walk to the riverside. People are giving the sopping wet hyena-woman in outlandish armor carrying two metal walruses a wide berth.
There are a number of wharves/docks along this stretch of the river. She's seen signs and heard chatter for Hierophant's Wharf, Mendicant's Wharf, and Everyman's Wharf.
What is she looking for? This will help her decide which of these seems like the best choice to seek out.

And he seems to be doing what he does best. Which is yelling at a mismatched pair of figures on the deck of his vessel, each wheeling a stack of crates around, zigging and zagging as Unda yells increasingly confused directions at them.
"No, Adducta, you take those down below! Vivi! Those are fragile~! Please! Slow down! Why are YOU going below? Those go in my cabin! NO, Adducta, you had it right before, don't stop there!...."
This continues on, unabated.

"If you're really here to offer your ah, services again, I *could* use some help in getting my ship loaded. These two are proving to be of, shall we say, dubious worth."

He directs Gillian to help with the loading.
It takes some wrangling to get Adducta and Vivi back on task (Neither of them seem like the sharpest spoons in the drawer), but Gillian, with her BA-member strength, manages to do the hyena's-share of the lifting, getting the crates and boxes squared away in the hold. Gillian notices that the furnace that the fire elementals used to stoke has been replaced with what appears to be a large hamster-wheel hooked up a bellows-and-boiler contraption by a series of wires and clamps.
"We're headed back to Profluo as soon as the Trade and Commerce Officers check our manifest." Adducta says, pronouncing each word slowly and carefully.
Unda nods to Gillian. "What's brought you back to fair Indrasena, Miss Yevon?"

They set off! Below decks, Adducta steps onto the hamster-wheel and begins plodding along, slowly at first, building speed until she's got the wheel going at a steady-to-fast jog.
Unda has to stop a few times to show his ship's manifest to officers of the Trade and Commerce Commission, who turn out to be the yellow-sashed individuals she saw earlier. Unda seems nervous each time, and has Adducta and Vivi stay conspicuously belowdecks.
But, whatever is bothering the elemental seems to be nothing of consequence, as they're ushered out of the city and onto the river!
They sail under Adducta's steam for a few hours, Unda chatting with Gillian about her life beyond the Portal.
They pass the patchwork farms and estates that surround Aham-Sphurana's walls. The country becomes rougher, with the stream of foot-traffic along the riverside road dwindling as they chug further and further away from the city.
"Profluo is on the coast to the Northwest. Lovely town, you'll be just agog for it. Or well, you might be. It's one of the few places on Indrasena that we Elementals can really call our own. Houses one of the Monads, you see."

Of course we're still part of the Church's jurisdiction, you understand."
From somewhere far behind them on the river comes an ear-splitting whistle, followed by a booming voice.
"CUT YOUR ENGINE AND HALT. I REPEAT, CUT YOUR ENGINE AND HALT IMMEDIATELY."
From around a bend in the river comes a boat at least half as big again as Unda's, painted in tones of bright yellow, shining like a waterborne sun.
Unda breaks into a sudden sweat, droplets falling and being reabsorbed by his aqueous body. "Well that comes a bit sooner than I ah, e-expected." He turns to Gillian. "So, ah, Miss Yevon, if you would do me the kindness of helping to tie everything down. We may need to pick up a bit of speed here."

Unda grips the steering with both hands, steering wildly as the steamboat skips across the water at breakneck speed. Maniacal laughter echoes from below decks. Gillian slides across the deck, slamming her head against the railing and managing to catch her grip there.
The yellow ship dwindles away into the distance behind them, still shouting for them to stop.
Unda chortles, jerking the wheel to avoid smashing the boat into an embankment. "Gillian! Please go tell Vivi that that's quite enough!"

Unda's eye twitches. "But why in the world would anything ever be easy for me?"
The water pouring into the hold shudders and reforms into a pair of water elementals streaked through with flecks of ice.
"Search it. Grab the stuff, and let's get out of here." The left elemental says, hands congealing slowly into a mass of spiked ice.
"An' if they get in our way?" the second elemental says, fingers freezing into sharp-looking icicles.
"Put 'em down. Noone will miss 'em." Spikes growls.

Unda and Adducta remain too stunned by proceedings to act. The water rises.

Gillian finds a necklace stuck between her teeth. Spikemaul must have been wearing it. It's a small golden chain, with a ovoid pendant attached. The pendant is emblazoned with a set of geometric linked squares.

The totemic magic spell doesn't do a whole bunch, being designed to foster healing in living organisms rather than vessels.

After a tense bit of boatwork, with Unda running below several times to keep the water out of the ship, Gillian and company reach a fork in the river. Ahead, past several hills and bends in the river, Gillian spots the encapsulated blue expanse of a bay.
An island seemingly entirely covered with buildings and constructions lies in the center of the bay, and Gillian can make out a forest of masts and smokestacks bristling out of an crowded quay along the shoreward side of the island.
Unda gently steers the boat away from the bay, guiding the vessel down the fork and through a complex system of smaller byways, sometimes using his particular elemental skills to swell the streams with enough water to carry the boat safely down them.
He stops the boat in a deeply shadowed corner of foliage, out of sight of both the main river and the city.
"This is my ah, drop point, shall we say. I'm impatient to conclude my business with this delicate cargo, but considering that attack earlier, I think I'd rather send you ahead to get to the bottom of this before I contact my buyers. Can you find your way to the city? It's the island in the bay, in case you missed it."

He turns back to Gil, frowning. "Once you know who was behind this, I trust that you'll use your terrifying predilection for seeming to ah, eat your problems for me. Feel free to visit Peruro and his sweetheart. They've been living in Bayside, working in the boilers, I believe."

Gillian takes to the skies, gliding above the canopy of the jungle toward the pointed roofs and tangle of masts of Profluo. Below, she can see that the shore of the bay is speckled with clusters of buildings, mostly warehouses and docks, a collection of satellite villages fanning out from Profluo like the lines of a spider's web. She spots ferries running back and forth from the city to the smaller docks, filled with a motley assortment of Elementals and Deva. Alongside the ferries are the stone-steppers Unda mentioned, Earth Elementals raising temporary roads up from the floor of the bay one block at a time, the causeways vanishing behind them as they plod toward the city, carriages in tow.
As she gets closer to the city, she feels a change in the air, and the wind wraps around her like a fist, forcibly adjusting her flight course toward one of the (previously unnoticed) Balloon-Structures orbiting the city.
It's a small house held aloft by a large cloth balloon. The house is all painted wood and square windows, with an ornately carved door that swings open as she approaches. The force of wind dumping her gracelessly into a rug-covered room with a wooden table, a pair of chairs, and a small bookcase. An Elemental, all diaphanous air, wearing an elaborately embroidered turban and a chain of winking metal over a loose silk robe, smiles at the beastwoman.
"Hello there!" he says, another current of air pushing Gillian to her feet, scooting the chair out for her, and flumphing her down into it, setting the whole room shaking. "What brings you to Profluo, miss? It's terribly rude to just fly in unannounced. We might think you're up to no good."

The two-thirds of the city that face the bay, by contrast, seem to be much more lived in. The buildings are shorter, the streets a bit dirtier. There are numerous squares , each filled with assortments of permanent and temporary stalls, all alive with crowds of humans, deva, and elemental shoppers. The canals in Bayside are wider, designed for commercial traffic, and all lead to the encompassing fringe of docks, warehouses, and mercantile marine mess that is the Bayside coast of Profluo. These, Gillian notes, are an absolute hive of activity, as boats are guided in, guided out, loading and unloading holds full of goods of all kinds.
The center of the Island is a large, high-walled circle of green, seemingly untouched by the bustling world of commerce around it. It spreads, art manicured garden and part untamed jungle, from a large polyhedral stone rising out of a vibrant pond.
Where to, Gillian?

The Husky Bunion is a two-story ramshackle of a building, seemingly held together as much by grit and hope as actual architectural support. Singing filters out from the papered-over windows in front of the Husky Bunion. Gillian notes she has to step carefully to avoid the broken glass littering the street in an arc in front of the tavern. Several thick-looking Deva sit on dilapidated stools by the door, eyeing Gillian cautiously.

Gillian, thus led, heads inside.
The Husky Bunion is a low-roofed smokey mess of a tavern, with grimy tables and sticky floors. A long bar takes up most of the far wall, with an L-shaped addition blocked by a set of thick curtains and an Earth Elemental bouncer. Wisps of fantastically colored smoke waft through the curtains occasionally, mingling with the tobacco and other smokes that linger in a thin cloud by the ceiling. Gillian spots an assortment of lean-looking Elementals crowding a table near the bouncer, glancing anxiously at the restricted area.
The crowd here is mostly sailors and fishermen, along with the sort of rough-looking toughs that Gillian recognizes as thieves and gangsters between jobs. The bar is run by a hang-down hound Pashubi, sullenly plodding between customers, refilling drinks here, accepting payment there.
Before Gillian can ask anyone about Anodyne, a soft voice, sickly-sweet and simpering, echoes through her mind.
Looking for me, are you? My, how nice it is to be wanted. Come, sit at the table in the far corner.
Gillian looks around, spotting an empty table in the corner furthest from the restricted area.
That's the one! Come now, please don't waste my time.

Gillian focuses, using her mental discipline to bring her memory under her will. Anodyne begins hitting walls, and shifts to Gillian's memories of Corruption. These are tricky, redolent with addictive power, promises of filth and glory, of potential squandered and lives destroyed. Anodyne is taken aback, and this gives Gillian the moment she needs to solidify her mental defenses, blocking Anodyne from taking any more liberties with Gillian's psyche.
Boo, not fair~! Anodyne pouts as she withdraws herself from Gillian's mind. And you know my very own sweetheart, Unda. Do tell him to visit me. I'm dying to catch up with him after our last liaison. Anyways, a deal is a deal.
Anodyne fills Gillian's mind with a series of images and impressions.
A pendant, identical to the one Gillian holds. A manhole cover in a gritty alley ending in a dismal canal. Lengths of slime-coated sewer, the sound of sea surrounding. A banded door flanked by small electric lamps.

She spends the next hour and a half searching Bayside for the alley from her vision, poking her muzzle down streets and avenues, disturbing beggars, bums, and layabouts. The sounds and smells of the waterfront, never far away in Bayside, suffuse the air, and Gillian begins to get a feeling that she's been followed. She begins to cover her tracks a bit more intentionally, doubling-back around corners, working to blend into the crowds of laborers and fishermen.
The sun is going down as she (finally) finds the alley from Anodyne's vision. It ends in a canal clogged with the detritus of city living, the only water visible an unappetizing sludge. A manhole cover punctuates the center of the alley, with wisps of tobacco smoke curling out from under it.

Cutting through the bouquet of citywaste, she smells wafting traces of cigar smoke. Of tallow lamps.
Lights flicker ahead around a slimy corner, casting the shadows of several humanoid figures onto the wall.

She hears the creak and thud of a door opening and closing.

They're carrying an assortment of chains, knuckles, lengths of pipe, and knives. The deva is notably tattooed across most of her visible skin, but her veil of water-and-shadow prevent her from getting a real read on what they signify.
She has the initiative here, prepared as she was. They're approaching and fanning out around her hiding place. What's the plan?

The deva's instruction is cut off as Gillian bursts from her veil of shadow and Lifewater with a gleeful cackle, gouging at the nearest target(the elemental)'s throat with reckless abandon.
The sickly-green elemental rears backward in surprise, taking several heavy blows across it's rather amorphous neck as Gillian leaps onto it. It takes heavy damage and is inflicted with Wounded: Maimed. Gouts of stinging acid coat the hyena-woman, inflicting Dissolving and shutting down her Lifewater Regen as the acidic essence wears at her ability to heal herself.
The Deva runs a hand over the tattoos on one of her arms, which flare up and fade out of sight. Gillian's vision swims with opaque colors and patterns as she's temporarily inflicted with Impaired: Blind.
The other 4 gangsters pile onto the blinded Gillian, raining blows down on her with knives, chains, and pipes. She takes 4 instances of light damage as her armor stops the worst of the blows.

Gillian blind-fires ki in a wild spray around her, hoping to create space between her and her attackers.
Unfortunately, her lack of sight means she can't exactly aim. She can hear a chorus of yelps as the gangsters skip backward, her fireballs going wide and splashing against the wet ceiling, sending waves of heat rolling across the tunnel.
This, in turn, dries out some of the combinations of moss, lichens, and sewer muck that have been built up along the ceiling of the sewer, which crack with a dry heaving sound and begin to clatter down around them in pieces.
The sewer channel surges suddenly, and a tide of crabs, rats, and other bottom feeders swell out across the floor, snatching up pieces of the sudden buffet. Gillian and the gangsters take light damage from the swarm scrabbling across them none too gently.
Gillian sniffs the air, working to get an olefactory picture of the surroundings to offset her blindness. She's a hyena. She's doing pretty okay at it. The other gangsters are a sort of smelly blob a few paces away from her. The floor is a smelly mass of scrabbling vermin.

She impacts a mess of fur and flesh, her heavy armor granting her incredible momentum, driving the target into the heavily wounded elemental and sending all three crashing into the floor, parting the mass of swarming vermin. The Elemental expires, his acidic body losing surface tension and spreading in a hissing puddle across the slime-smeared sewer. The pashubi gangster takes heavy damage as Gillian savages him, unable to fight back against the cyclone of claws and teeth.
She hears the voice of the tattooed Deva shout, and a patch of smell breaks off from the blob, sprinting back toward the entrance to the gangster's holdfast.
Two of the other gangsters flail ineffectually at Gillian, dealing no damage that makes it past her defenses.

Vision swimming, Gillian snatches at the bodies of the gangsters in front of her, whipping them around toward the others and sending them all crashing into a disorderly heap as she leaps toward the fleeing Deva.
She barrels into her with a *thud*, sending them both sprawling through the door to the hide-out. Gilian throws her hands up behind her, releasing a series of ki-fireballs at the door. The sewer shudders as the flames weaken centuries-old mortar. With a tremendous crash, the archway collapses, dealing moderate damage to Gillian and killing the Deva outright.
Gillian, coated in dust and dented up, finds herself in a mess hall. A long table dominates the room, with a small fire pit in the far corner. Holes in the ceiling vent the smoke away through circuitous channels.
There's another door in the opposite wall.

The hammerer skips backwards, forehead beading with sweat and he adjusts the stub of a cigar jutting from his thick lip, assessing Gillian's condition.
The room is a well-upholstered sitting room, seemingly used for the gang's "official" business dealings. A large wooden desk in the opposite corner. Several crates on dolleys are stacked against the wall, and an open pouch of a silvery powdery substance. The room smells *awful*, just like the Ardurian Fruit in Unda's hold.

The gangster leaps to his feet somewhat gingerly and crosses the distance back at Gillian, his piston-hammer whirring.

Upon contact with the energy-fire, the Ardurian Powder ignites with a dull *whumph*, filling the room with a blinding flash of fire. The gangster screams in pain as he's seared by the sudden heat. Gillian rolls backward nimbly, shielding her eyes.
His scream drops into a guttural howl as the rest of the Powder bags behind him catch suddenly with a three-part explosion- *whumph* *whumph* *whumph*. The fine upholstery, the wooden desk, the peeling wall-paper-- they all go up in flames.
The gangster's room is now a seething wall of heat. Gillian can see a dark shape stumbling around inside of it, waving its arms futilely above it's head as it attempts to find it's way out of the conflagration.
Gillian finds she suddenly has a headache.

Perception knits itself back together around Gillian. She finds herself floating a few inches above a broad, scaled, and slightly rounded road stretching before and behind her into the horizon.
Above, beside, and below, in the far distance, are the slowly twisting coils of a titanic serpent, constellations visible within it's scales. One of the scales of the coil she finds herself on opens like a trap-door, and a figure emerges. It has the body of a snake- long, patterned with vibrant bands of color- and the head of an old, wrinkled man.
"Apologies", the snake? says. "Indrasena's going through a lot of changes, thanks to you Nexites and your Infinite Crises. Better and safer for everybody if we just snag you out of there for a few moments while things work themselves out. No offense, but we don't quite trust what you'd get up to if you were present for such an audit."
Gillian has a splitting head-ache. A voice, not hers, begins to murmur, as if directly in her ear. "I feel as though I just got rolled out like roti. Wh-where am I?"
She can see a pink-purple shimmer in the air- vaguely humanoid. The snake-man looks as surprises as Anodyne does.
"Oh, well then. That's a problem." the snake grumbles. "I picked up an extra. Hey!" He slithers up to Anodyne. "I'm going to send you back now- hold still!"
Anodyne is ignoring him, looking out at the garden of coils above her- at a constellation forming a multi-armed, rainbow-hued humanoid seated on a lotus. "I-I understand now," she stammers. Her form begins to fray at the edges, refracting in a rainbow mirroring that of the figure in the snake-cosmos above her.
The snake-man begins to undulate, radiating his own magic. "Cripes, how am I going to explain this one?" he grimaces. Anodyne turns to Gillian and the snake-man. "No, wrong way to look at it. *I* don't understand. *I* don't *exist*." She laughs, prismatic in this space-outside-space.
The snake-man finishes his incantation. Anodyne vanishes, folded into Nowhere.
"Hrm. Close one there. Not sure if I sent her back or if she went back herself." he grunts. "Anyways, it feels like things are ssettled on devaloka. I can put you back. Can't guarantee you'll be exactly where- or when- you were before. You'll rebound with your current self in the Nexus if you do. Either that or I can send you back to your Nexus directly. What'll it be?"
