Re: Does a Circle ever Begin?

Pathaky wrote: Orkanith is a large spherical stone chamber. The walls are covered in engravings of what seems to be ancient history-- scenes of mighty kings crushing the skulls of their enemies beneath their feet, and of bloody sacrifices made under the crescent moon and radiant sun. The center of the chamber is punctuated with an altar, a large rectangle of rough-cut stone, notched and stained. Tunnels dot the upper third of the chamber, the only exits in sight.

Elder Kabanha reclines in mid-air opposite Orkanith, smiling thinly at him.

"A simple spell of translocation. A trifle. Now. Radiant One. Outlander. Tell me true. What aim do you have in delving into the forbidden arts of our society? Do you fear death? Do you desire power? There are many paths that lead the receptive to our Circle."

Armocida wrote: Orkanith crosses his legs and floats in the air as well. "I do not fear death as i am immortal already. I am one who follows the paths of power, that is why i seek to learn from you Elder."

Pathaky wrote: Kabanha smiles sardonically. "Oh yes, we know of the privileges your kind, these Arena members, enjoy. But if I were, for example to kill you here, where you are alone, in one of my seats of power, you would still die." It shrugs. "You would not, of course, stay dead, but you would die nonetheless. We aim higher than being the lapdog of an outland slavedriver."

Water drips from the tunnels in the ceiling, evaporating in mid air with plops and hisses.

"Still, here you are. Seeking to tread the paths of power. And your nobility demanded that you avoid sacrificing your friends in your pursuit." it cackles. "This will be fun. Very well, the price must be paid by you alone."

Kabanha rests a finger on it's chin.

"Are you prepared to pay in Blood, in Time, in Strength? Are you prepared to shred your nobility and forsake your former loves? Are you prepared to bring forth the seeds of the Dead? To serve in letting all things run over back into themselves? So that the Circle may remain Unbroken?

Armocida wrote: Orkanith looks at Kabanha, "What would you have me do Elder? As he says that hr slightly bows at the waist.

Pathaky wrote: Kabanha grins triumphantly. "Stand still."

It ritual-sketches a symbol in the air.

"You will pay in Blood." it whispers. Orkanith feels pain scream throughout his body, and tides of his angelic blood seep from his pores, gathering in a luminescent sphere above the basalt altar.

Orkanith gains:

Deathly Anemia- (Passive Ability, Curse) Possessor suffers -2,000 CON, Possessor is inflicted with Fatigued: Weakness at the start of each round. If possessor takes more than one action per round, any actions past the first are cancelled, and possessor is inflicted an instance of Fatigued: Stunned that ignores the resistances and immunities of individuals under level 60.

"You will pay in Time." it whispers. Orkanith feels his body lock in place.

Orkanith is locked, catatonic, into this thread for 7 days while Kabanha's ritual is completed.

"You have paid in Strength, and reap Strength." it whispers.

Orkanith feels a wrenching sensation and watches as a silvery-shadow of the fallen angel is ripped from his body and laid in gentle repose alongside the sphere of blood above the altar. The blood and the soul shimmer together, bending into a ribbon of swiftly flowing light.

"Welcome back." it says. "There is yet much to be done." It motions to the mass of soulstuff and blood on the altar, which, over the course of the week, has crystallized into a roughcut red gem.

"That is your soul, Radiant One. I shall be keeping it for the time being. But it must be strengthened. Fed. Rendered Sacrifice. Leave through this tunnel," Kabanha points, "and make your way to the Nadir of Solitude. Bring back what you find there."

Armocida wrote: Orkanith bows at the waist, "It shall be done Elder." Orkanith walks off down the tunnel.

"I shall be performing some small rituals on your Soul to prepare it for the upcoming sacrifice, O Radiant One. Do not be alarmed if you experience...moments of weakness."

Orkanith follows the tunnel for nearly half an hour as it winds through the darkness. It finally opens into a rectangular chamber, and Orkanith's BA-senses flash a quick overlay of text across his vision as the tunnel behind him swims hazily before vanishing into smooth, solid stone.

-Darkhallowed Crypt: Nadir of Solitude-

The chamber is made of the same lightless stone as the tunnel. It is dark, apart from a mess of organic shapes in the corner that glow with pale witch-light. A pair of basalt thrones punctuate the center of the room. Two skeletons, unrusted swords balanced across their laps, grin motionlessly at Orkanith from atop their seats.

Two scholars of repute, each confident in their knowledge, each learned in their field.

Each guarding a secret, one containing life eternal, and the other nothing but the Eldest Fear, death.

One, bound by arcane writ to only speak the truth, the other similarly bound to speak only falsehood.

Seeker of Power, ask but one question to determine the true path to the secret.

The small figurines turn their faces up at Orkanith, shriveled smiles seeming to flicker in the witch-light of the furnace.

Pathaky wrote: Orkanith walks across the chamber, his footfalls echoing strangely despite the enclosed space. The twin skeletons on their thrones seem to follow his progress with their hollow eyes.

Orkanith attempts to open the Western Door. Across the room at the North Exit, the darkness coalesces into a sphere of crushing gravity.

The door opens into a lengthy hallway made of the same stone, winding north. There are three new exits here, one further along the Eastern side of the corridor, one along the Western, and one that the corridor ends into, heading North.

Radiant One, heed one of the lessons of my Nadir of Solitude. A circle is made of an infinite span of points, and is yet one singular whole. Just so, our Unbroken Circle is made of an infinite span of disciples, working in concert to bring a true end to the Eldest Fear.

A portal of inky blackness unzips in the air next to Orkanith, and he sees Elder Kabanha push through a child-sized figure as the portal closes.

The figure stands, dusting itself off and adjusting the veil covering the bottom half of her face. Talitha, Least of the Unbroken Circle, glares up at the fallen angel.

"I'm no happier about this than you are, you horrible monster." she pouts.

Armocida wrote: "Oh hey there Talitha, it has been a while hasn't it? Well shall we just get this over with then go to the other lever and let's pull them in unison. " When she crosses the room to her lever Orkanith will count and will pull the lever.

Pathaky wrote: "Yes, it has been a while since you sliced me in half." Talitha snarks. "And look at you now! Pretending like you're part of our family!" She marches over to Orkanith, glaring up at him. "I'm going to have fun watching you fail, 'O Radiant One'."

She flounces over the lever in the opposite corner.

"Let's get out of here." she says, and pulls alongside the fallen angel.

The door rumbles and slides open, revealing a oval chamber with a large chain hanging from a trapdoor in the ceiling. Another locked slab bars your progress further toward the Nadir.

Armocida wrote: "Dont take it personally hun i just dont take kindly to people screwing with my friends. By the way if i fail here so do you, kabanha did not seem to happy with you when he sent you here. Want to do me a favor darling and pull on that chain?"

Pathaky wrote: Talitha shakes her head.

"What you don't know could fill a book, Radiant One."

She approaches the center of the room and pulls the chain.

The trapdoor in the ceiling rumbles, dislodging dust as it opens, revealing a stone vent, angling away into shadow. Talitha smiles. "Be a dear and head on up to unlock this door, will you? I promise to keep the trapdoor open."

Armocida wrote: "Geez if only you were not so obvious in your intents child....fine i shall play along." Orkanith grabs the chain from talitha and uses his veil rending strength to rip the door off its hinges. He then flies into the vent and unlocks the door.

Pathaky wrote: Orkanith snatches the chain from Talitha's hands and wrenches the chain downward, intending to rip the trap-doors off of his hinges. He pulls, feeling the chain strain under his Render-boosted strength as the trapdoor slams into the ceiling, dislodging still more dust and loose masonry. With a sound like a thunderclap, the sheet of stone cracks and falls, booming as it breaks into a dozen pieces a few feet from Talitha and Orkanith. She rolls her eyes.

Orkanith then flies up into the vent, which twists to the left, and then the right before ending in a small, dusty lever.

The sides of the vent, Orkanith notices, are very nearly porous, filled with a honeycomb of smaller, almost organic looking tunnels.

He hears a shriek from down below, accompanied by the tell-tall ozone smell of magic wafting up into the vent. And the buzz of...insects?

Armocida wrote: Orkanith will fly out of the vent and to see what is going on. If necessary he will save Talitha from the insects and place her close to the door where we need to go. "We need to vanquish these insects, and we need to do it now." Orkanith wills energy into his blade it starts to glow a radiant greenish color he casts:

Atomic Wave-Slash- (Spell, Sword Arts, Atomic, 170,000 HP, 70,000,000 Gold) +70,000 Melee Attack, 70% inflicts Poison: Irradiated, 1 hit against 600,000, Caster must have a Sword equipped

Pathaky wrote: Orkanith awkwardly turns around in the vent, it's tight confines making free movement difficult. As he shuffles around, he comes face to face with an seething mass of locust-bodied insects, pouring from the holes in the walls around him. They boil towards Orkanith, stinging and biting him for light damage. He charges his sword with lime-green atomic energy, but in such tight confines, his ability to slash is impeded, and he awkwardly prods the swarm, flushing the vent with atomic energy, nonetheless dealing heavy damage to the swarm, crisping many of the insects, but he's unable to avoid the atomic blowback, which flumes both backwards toward him and out of the trapdoor in the ceiling. Both Orkanith and Talitha take light damage from the irradiated energy.

"Pull the lever, you idiot!" Talitha shrieks. Orkanith can see flashes of umbral light filter up from the room below, casting unearthly shadows on the vent's stone ceiling.

Insects continue to pour from the walls and ceiling of the vent.

Armocida wrote: Orkanith pulls the lever and leaves the vent

Pathaky wrote: Orkanith kicks backwards, flipping the lever with his foot as he propels himself through the already-reforming swarm of locust-things and out of vent, landing gracefully by Talitha, who is holding a wand and flicking it in long, elegant patterns, eyes narrowed in satisfaction as the swarms of locust things fall, one after another.

The door begins to inch upward, slowly. It's going to take a few rounds to fully open.

The locust-things coalesce into the loose, swarmborn shape of a death's head, dripping Darkness mana in sticky gobs.

Armocida wrote: "continue attacking" Orkanith grabs talitha and retreats to the door to wait for it to move upwards, he then draws a pattern between the two of them and the insects and pushes the wave towards the insects.

Pathaky wrote: Orkanith grabs Talitha by the collar. She yelps, but continues her magical assault, shearing off slices of insect-skull as the pair retreat. Orkanith charges his waveblade and draws a pattern in the air, pushing it toward the skull, which shrinks noticeably as more locust-things fall to the ground.

Behind them, the door continues to inch upward.

The locust-skull thing skins, it's rictus grin distorting and smearing as the locust-things swarm. Orkanith feels a weight drop around his shoulders as magic radiates out in black patterns. Orkanith feels suddenly unlucky.

Armocida wrote: Orkanith continues his wave assault on the insects, "Kabanha what the hell did they do to me?"

Pathaky wrote: It seems these creatures have the ability bestow ill-fortune. How unlucky. Kabanha purrs.

Talitha snorts. "Not to worry." she says, flicking her wand at Orkanith. He feels the mantle of misfortune lift from his shoulders and sail across the chamber to settle on the death's head, which begins to swarm erratically as it's insects bump into each other, their synchronicity addled.

Orkanith fights through the still-present Pain to slash at the locust-things again, hacking away a good third of their addled shrinking skull with ribbons of radiant energy.

Behind Orky, the door has opened enough for Talitha to drop to the floor and shimmy under, quick as a snake.

The swarm, getting desparate, rushes Orkanith, scouring him with a cloud of teeth and claws for light damage.

Armocida wrote: Orkanith continues with the power of the waveblade he also adds to the mix

Pathaky wrote: Orkanith backs against the door, slicing in circles around him with killing intent, depleting the swarm until it retreats, straggling insects falling to the floor as they do.

Orkanith gains XP for a level 35 entity.

The door finishes opening with a dusty thud, revealing Talitha leaning against the wall, smiling with her eyes at Orkanith.

"How nice of you to join me!" she says. "Are you done lollygagging? We have an item to retrieve."

The next chamber is bigger than any Orky's seen so far, the ceiling out of sight, shrouded in darkness.

Pillars as wide as three orkaniths fade into the gloom, and, in the middle distance, silhouetted by a shaft of light, is a pedestal with a a small dish atop it.

Orkanith shoots a small wave of light up toward the ceiling. This wave of light illuminates the corpse of a massive humanoid tiger pinned to the ceiling by long, black spikes, vanishing back into shadow as the wave disperses.

A dark, rich voice rumbles out of the darkness.

"Kabanha, have you sent me more morsels? When I suck the marrow from their bones, will you end my torment?"

In the darkness, there are snapping sounds, followed by a rush of displaced air.

We shall see, old friend. We shall see, Kabanha purrs.

Declare your actions.

Pathaky wrote: Orkanith reaches out pulls Talitha close, ignoring her muffled yelp of disapproval as he weaves a lattice of wave-energy in front of him, sending it soaring across the chamber with a slash of his wave-blade.

The lattice-design illuminates the chamber as it flies, revealing a glimpse of a large, four-legged shape, all hanging skin and glimpses of bone, darting behind one of the pillars with preternatural swiftness. The lattice impacts the chamber, sending dust and loose masonry cascading from the ceiling and pulverizing the pillar the monstrosity is hiding behind.

The rich, deep voice fills the chambers with an eerie, sing-song chant. Black blood splatters the edges of their circle of radiant light in macabe arcs, sizzling and bubbling, little feline arms scrabbling out of the blood and forming 3 small, squat striped tiger-demons that grin up at Talitha and Orkanith as their forms solidify.

Talitha, from behind Orkanith, waves her wand, creating a spiral ribbon of purple-pink magic that surrounds the demons and restrains them, tying itself in a neat bow as the minor demons hiss and scratch at their restraints.

The large rakshasha darts from behind the wreckage of the pillar, sliding, snakelike behind the next, large stained claws creeping around the edges, as if inviting it's opponents to come closer.

Armocida wrote: "Any ideas on how to proceed Talitha?" Orkanith again draws an elaborate design in the air and sends it surging forward.

Pathaky wrote: Talitha continues to twist and twirl her wand, retying the knot around the truculent demons. "Wish I could help." Talitha snarls, "But our dear Kabanha seems to have changed the trial since I came through here last time. We've got to find a way to pin it down."

Orkanith draws a second lattice of energy, sending it across the chamber, splintering another pillar. The rakshasa takes minor damage from the pieces of masonry and bounds out from it's hiding place, back on the edge of vision, chanting profane syllables that ring through Orkanith's ears. The air in the chamber feels suddenly hot, humid and oppressive with the warmth of alien jungles. The scent of hot blood fills Orkanith's nose.

Orkanith takes minor damage and is inflicted with Hexed and Wounded: Bleeding as the otherwordly Blood magic wracks his body.

Talitha takes moderate damage and is inflicted with Wounded: Bleeding and Pain.

His antlers (forgot he had those, didya?) babble encouragement as he does.

The dead rakshasa, surprised Orkanith's speed and ferocity, twists, body blurring as it attempts to craft an illusionary veil, misleading the attack. Orkanith swings faster, dealing moderate-to-high damage as he smites the tiger-demon, but fails to inflict any of his bevy of status effects. He notices that while his light-infused attack strikes true, his Draugr's Axe, a weapon of solid Physicality, seems to glance off the Rakshasa's magical hide. The searing attack cauterizes the wound, preventing the Rakshasa from siring any more Blood Children.

The Rakshasa, writhing in pain, slithers out and around the radiant undead(ish) angel, forking into 5 identical Rakshasa, which in turn fork and divide into 25, the edges of the new Mirror Legion blurring and leaking shadow.

Talitha finishes strangling the existing minidemons, which pop like overripe fruit and return to the blood from which they were born. She wipes corpse-sweat from her brow and examines the legion of Rakshasa striding throughout the chamber, filling the air with the cacophony of their rumbling laughter. She scoffs and pricks her finger, dripping her own black blood in a small circle before her, smearing it with one foot as she breaks the design and chants a word of magic that cuts, like a scythe through wheat, through the darkness of the chamber. The Rakshasa-copies frizz and dissolve like morning mist, leaving the real foe to stamp a clawed paw in frustration. Talitha chuckles. "He's all yours, "O Radiant One"."

Talitha bleeds, taking light damage. She begins to hover, twirling her wand once more and leaving a ribbon of sickly-orange energy that snakes toward the Rakshasa, impacting it for light damage as it slides obliquely off it's Magic resistant corpse.

The Rakshasa leaps straight up, body twisting as it clutches the ceiling overhead, eyes finding Talitha and flashing with a purple malice. Talitha screams and falls to the ground, taking moderate MIN damage and becoming inflicted with MIN Drain and Mindblasted.

Armocida wrote: "No! Talitha!" Orkanith thinks to Kabanha "Make the pain stop or Talitha is going to die." Orkanith repeats his actions to help draw attention away from Talitha.

Pathaky wrote: Kabanha's wheezing laughter echoes through Orkanith's mind.

I'm afraid those aren't the magic words, my dear pupil. Try again.

Orkanith bleeds for light damage. Talitha shudders as she takes moderate psychic element damage from Mindblasted.

Fighting through the pain, Orkanith leaps into the air. His wings of shadow carry him upward toward the ceiling, where he slams into the Rakshasa, blade first. The Overdriven attack pierces the undead demon's reflexive illusions, pinning him to the ceiling and dealing heavy damage. The ceiling cracks from the force of the blow, sending Orkanith and his foe tumbling to the floor of the chamber amid an avalanche of stone and dust. Both take moderate damage from the impact and falling debris.

Talitha stumbles to her feet, clutching her head with one hand. She begins muttering and tracing a sigil beneath her feet in headache-inducing purple light.

The Rakshasa rakes Orkanith with it's terrible claws as it attempts to scramble away from the terrible radiance. Orkanith takes light damage as his Radiant Armor blunts the Darkness of it's strikes.

Orkanith is rather the worse for wear, hovering below half HP.

His Invigoration allowing him to ignore his Bleeding to no negative effect, Orkanith wrenches his armaments free and uses his Third Overdrive to impale the Undead Rakshasa over and over again, each impact a wave of intermingled Light and Darkness casting huge inhuman shadows on the dust in the air and further, across the walls of the chamber. The Rakshasa takes heavy damage as it's body begins to break apart.

The Rakshasa screams in a mixture of relief and pain, blood spraying through the air in thick black arcs, bubbling into smaller tiger-faced wretches, giggling and scrambling at thin air.

Which are promptly popped, one by one, by lances of bright purple. Talitha, standing in the center of a magical mandala of eye-watering purple light that bubbles up around her, still clutching her head, twirls her wand once more. The bubbles of light around her narrow into wicked barbs and sail across the obscured chamber, cutting through dust and falling rubble to pin the Rakshasa to the ground by it's wrists, ankles, and throat. The Rakshasa takes moderate damage and is Paralyzed by the coruscating light. It loses its action.

The angel strides across the ruined chamber toward the pedestal and the dish atop it.

Within is a small oily black stone, etched and carved into the rough approximation of a heart.

As Orkanith lifts it from the dish, he feels a red lassitude wash over him, a light-headed mixture of weakness and strength. Kabanha's voice echoes through his mind.

I am most pleased, Radiant One. Bring the Anahatalith to me and we will see what fruit your soul may bear.

Carrying the stone is harder than it should be. As Orkanith and Talitha work their way back through the Nadir of Solitude to Kabanha's chamber, Orkanith continues to feel the stone's influence wax and wane across his consciousness in vertiginous waves. It makes his new, ragged absence of soul ache like a broken window.

Kabanha is waiting for them, floating above the black altar, Orkanith's proto-phylactery spinning gently above one wrong-jointed paw.

"Welcome back," Kabanha purrs. "Talitha, you have served your purpose. Your own minder can see what lessons you have gleaned from this exercise. Begone."

Talitha opens her mouth to protest but vanishes as a inky purple portal opens beneath her feet, and with a *whoop* she falls through it, out of the chamber. The portal closes quickly behind her.

"Now," Kabanha nods to Orkanith. "Tell me. What lessons have you learned?"

"A potential trouble, to be sure. Our plans continue apace, but unwanted attention from our enemies could yet mar all. Outlander interference was unexpected at such an early stage," Kabanha muses, "....yes. Let us convene the Circle."

Kabanha snaps its wizened fingers and the etchings in the stone chamber begin to glow with ghostly radiance.

"Black Flame, I heed Your Whispers," Kabanha begins. A mote of pitch-black fire, radiating anti-light across the chamber and rapaciously devouring the light from the carvings, appears. "By the Annular Oath, by the Precepts of the Dusk Pact, I Demand your Obeisance."

The black fire grows flickering wildly in the still air. Orkanith finds his shadow cast toward the Black Flame.

"Black Flame, open me the Way to Paradise."

The Black Flame expands into an ellipse of inky absence, limit rimmed with looping prominences of obsidian fire.

Elder Kabanha motions toward the portal. "Follow me, Radiant Pupil. This, heh, may be a lesson all it's own."

Armocida wrote: Okranith looks at Kabanha then back at the portal and takes a deep breath and strides forward into the portal that will take him to “paradise.”

Pathaky wrote: Orkanith steps through the inky portal and is stretched, molecule by molecule, apart, each iota of his being spinning independently as he is hurtled through darkness. The heat is unbearable, even to his deadened senses. There is no distance, no sense of time or space. Only claustrophobic blackness on all sides, pouring into Orkanith and pouring through him.

And then, after an eternity of dark passage, Orkanith is suddenly deposited, in a belch of anti-light, in a lush garden. Banyan, rubber, jujube, and almond trees loom above him on all sides, trapped in a state of perpetual flowering, their heady perfume mixing with the banks and fields of multivariate flowers spreading in all directions. A small ways away lies a large table carved from a single piece of black wood. Thrones of the same black wood are arranged around it, with smaller, less ornately carved chairs flanking these thrones. Kabanha takes its place in a throne carved with the faces of wild cats and stylized blood and shoots of bamboo. It motions for Orkanith to take his place in one of its satellite chairs.

"It is traditional", Kabanha says, "For pupils to sit at the feet of their teachers."

Other inky portals wink open and shut around the garden, depositing other figures:

-A hunched man dressed in sackcloth, missing two fingers on his left hand, his right eye, and with scarification covering most of his visible body. He is carrying a staff topped with a black-iron lamp, within which the Black Flame rests. He croons to it inaudibly as he hobbles to another throne, scarcely paying Kabanha any mind. His only pupil is a gray-skinned humanoid with a smaller hand-held lamp, with a flicking spark of fire within.

-A deva woman dressed in the green-and-white robes of a Archipelago Bureaucrat. She smiles coyly at Kabanha and waits for her pupils, a whole team of harried-looking clerks, to pull her throne out for her. Then, in turn, the most senior of her pupils waits for their subordinates to pull out *their* chairs for them, down the line until the last one has to seat herself.

-Three dozen figures with faces of melted wax materialize simultaneously. Their long robes are embroidered with calligraphy declaring their magical deeds. The one robed with "I Am The Hidden Death" takes the throne, but the rest stand behind him, chorus-like, still as statues. There are no pupils.

-Talitha appears, shoots a reproachful glance at Kabanha, and takes her seat in one of the chairs next to the largest and most impressive throne, which remains empty.

-A fat woman festooned with rich jewelery appears, reclined upon a floating cushion that settles into her chair with her on it. A bunch of grapes appear with a snap of her fingers above her, and invisible servants pluck them, one by one, before dropping them into her mouth.

-An obsidian coffin, with the lid ajar juuust wide enough to show a set of waterlogged fingers clutching the side of the coffin, burst abscesses dripping trails of ichor down the smooth black sides of the coffin. The coffin is attended by a cadre of similarly waterlogged corpses that haul it next to the table.

More are arriving.

Kabanha grins down at you. "It is traditional for the pupils to mingle while their teachers arrive. Go forth. You will know when we are ready to begin."

"M-miss Talitha, w-would your master be joining us today?" he asks nervously.

"Yes." Talitha says flatly. "On his own time. Orkanith, this is Lamman, servant of the Keeper of the Black Flame. Lamman, this is Orkanith, Kabanha's latest plaything. Orkanith is from Beyond the Portal." she says significantly.

And with that, she skips off to talk to one of the wax-faced men.

Orkanith, you're standing by a nervous looking gray-skinned figure, clad in rags and holding a flicker of Black Fire in a black handlamp. Talitha has abandoned you for other company! What's the plan?

We will keep in touch and if your master can help me better than Kabanha then we will see that happens. I do however need to go talk to my master about the matters at hand today." Orkanith bows "It was a pleasure meeting you Lamman." He walks back over to Kabanha and leans back against the table facing Kabanha "So how will this all play out today Master? Will I go before the other Masters and share my news then amongst you all a decision on what needs to be done will be made?"

Pathaky wrote: Lamman waves weakly as Orkanith retreats back to his master.

Kabanha is currently leaned over the waterlogged obsidian casket, dessicated tail twitching at any bloated zombies that lurch to close to him. A thin, soppy voice wheedles out of the coffin up to the Rakshasa, but Orkanith can't make it out. Kabanha spots Orkanith approaching and intercepts him, wiping his paw off on his robes with a distasteful look back at the coffin.

"Horrible creature. Don't know why we even admitted her. Ah, Pupil. We should be starting any minute now, and when it is my turn to share my news with the circle, I shall call upon you to relate this offworld threat and what it represents.

The air ripples with heat and the assembled liches and spellcasters freeze.

"There's our cue." Kabanha says. "Take your seat, pupil."

The Unbroken Circle quickly find their places at the table. The birdsong of the paradisaical garden stops. Talitha is the last to take her seat at the head of the table, next to the largest and most impressive throne. A spot of orange-yellow light appears in the throne, a point of brilliance that appears as suddenly as if a light had been turned on.

Then it expands, unfolding in all directions with a rush of hellish heat and energy, a mandala of essence expanding and unwrapping until the garden itself is gone, replaced by a sea of churning, boiling yellow and orange fire, the table and the members of the Unbroken Circle floating in it's midst, untouched. The heat and crackling pressure are nearly unbearable, even to Orkanith, like being struck by one billion diffuse bolts of lightning across his entire body and soul. In the sea, like a magic-eye picture, Orkanith can occasionally see the outline of a titanic skeleton.

A huge, seething voice rings through the minds of those present.

WE ARE CONVENED. SPEAK, MEMBERS OF THE UNBROKEN CIRCLE. HOW PROGRESSES OUR WORK? WHAT HINDERS OUR AIMS?

One by one, the Masters of the Circle stand (or at least take prominence), and speak.

-The Servant of the Black Flame explains the sacrifices he and Lamman have made, and of their efforts to find the Crypt of the Fire King, in order to house the Black Flame in a new, suitably profane, capitol.

-The Deva woman, introducing herself as Siddhi Sirasikar, explains that efforts to control the course of discourse within the Archipelago League continue according to plan, and that the peace with the Continent is safe for now, but that, as always, she's *terribly* busy hunting down troublemakers.

-The Spellcoat College speaks as one, with a melted voice, of their esoteric research into undeath and the other deeds they have stitched into their robes.

-The fat woman festooned with jewelry has been observing an old friend, that Efreet who got into all that trouble with the immolation cult and got picked up by the Chuch. He's gone through some interesting changes soon, and may be approaching what she calls "ripeness" for "harvesting".

-The coffin is shoved upright and inside, Auntie Greenteeth wheedles that she has found a few *wonderful* potential candidates for her new coven, and all it's going to take is some *convincing* to bring them around.

-A man in a threadbare sarong, looking nearly as dessicated as Kabanha explains that the Eldest Fear, the Old King, has been improving. This announcement seems to improve the general mood at the table, and even the sea of violence surrounding the Circle calms somewhat.

Finally, it is Kabanha's turn.

"Fellow Masters, my newest pupil is an Outlander from beyond Indrasena, from Nexus. And what he has told is troubling. Please, "Radiant" Orkanith Morthos, explain what you feel the Circle needs to know."

All eyes and presences are pointed at Orkanith.

Armocida wrote: "I had ventured here to Indrasena to help the cartographers league chart the new hope islands with a companion of mine. When i joined up with Kabanha here and he informed me that they had killed Pithma his other pupil. It dawned on me that they are going to report the existence of the unbroken circle to the proper authorities and quite possibly an enemy of the circle, they will also probably call on some off world aid to help them seek and hunt us down to eradicate us. Believe me when I say that we do not want those individuals from Nexus poking around our affairs."

Pathaky wrote: Orkanith feels the pressure of the attention of the Circle weighing on him.

"We have survived scouring by the Church," says the bejeweled woman, "what have we to fear from outworld freaks? If they're like you, dear, no offense, then I don't think we have to worry much at all!"

She titters to herself at that. The obsidian coffin twitches, and it's resident's wet voice seeps out. "Beware overconfidence...~ This one has...mutability...potential...a stamp upon its essence that marks it as...a powerful possibility. Child, what have we deathless to fear from the denizens of this.... Nexus? Are they all as you are?"

Armocida wrote: "Some are as I yes, but there are more that would be way more powerful than I and should not be taken lightly. When word gets back to the church then the church may try to contact some help from those in Nexus that have the power to put the circle in a world of hurt."

Pathaky wrote: The archipelago bureaucrat leans forward at the table, smiling sardonically.

"Morthos, was it? If this is true, and you'd have to be crazier than a bag of cats to lie to us, here, at the center of our power, you, of course, wouldn't mind at all if I just...pry a bit-?"

Before Orkanith can respond, her smile deepens cruelly, and his brain explodes. Or at least, that's what it feels like.

Orkanith is laid bare before Senior Secretarial Seneschal Siddhi Sirasikar, Secret Servant of the Unbroken Circle, who collates and sorts his thoughts and memories, broadcasting them across the table and the energy-nightmare beyond for the Circle to observe.

They see Levana and Xecranal, fighting in the arena together against a seemingly endless menagerie of foes.

Nothing impressive here, I'm afraid...let's see what else you can give me....

They see the Inn, home to the Arena Members, lounging across the many variant Bars within.

Some of these arena members are quite strong indeed.

Ah, not all bluster after all. Some of these might be irritating, should they find us...

They see, through Orkanith's memory of the Quest Broadcast, some of the exploits of these Arena Members.

Some of these exploits, and their exploiters, are quite impressive, indeed.

They see mutable titans, all tentacles, alien majesty, and jocular masculinity, bearing an impossible array of blades.
They see cackling villains, casting opponents into strange, bastardizing fires that sap their strength and destroy them.
They see singular figures, angry beyond life, beyond death, shrieking for vengeance across space-time as they leap after their foes.
They see spirits of light and storm, arms raised to the sky, which answers their call with meteoric cataclysm.
They see entire nations working together, organizing vast arrays of spellwork into works of staggering scale and power.

They see these, and others, as Secretary Siddhi continues to search, her smile fading into a grim line as she roots mercilessly through Orkanith's psyche, until, seemingly satisfied, she ceases her search with a snap of her fingers.

The table is quiet. Kabanha nods to Siddhi. "Are you now satisfied as to the threat these offworlders present?" they say.

Siddhi grimaces. "Yes. I am."

Kabanha motions to the rest of the Circle. "Are you ALL satisfied? Or shall we continue to torment my apprentice and question my judgement in calling this council?"

The rest of the Circle, haltingly, one by one, give their assent.

Father, all around everyone and everything, terrible in scope, rumbles.

THE THREAT OF THESE OUTLANDERS CANNOT BE IGNORED. THEY, LIKE US, HAVE SURPASSED THE ELDEST FEAR. WE MUST HASTEN THE COMPLETION OF OUR PLANS BEFORE THEIR INTERFERENCE MARS ALL. GO, CIRCLE, AND COMPLETE YOUR TASKS. PREPARE YOURSELVES FOR THESE OUTLAND ALIENS. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THEM. IF THEY INTERFERE WITH ANY OF YOU, REACH OUT TO ME AND I WILL BE THERE.

The members of the Unbroken Circle pay respect, by gesture, bow, or curtsy, as the energy presence recedes, and the idyllic orchard reappears. The sea of heat, fire, and pressure shrinks to a single point in the largest chair before winking out of existence. Orkanith can breath for the first time in what feels like days.

There's a moment of calm as the Circle speak to their neighbors. Anything Orkanith want to add/bring up/put forward/ask?

Armocida wrote: "You all are a form of undead beings weak to light from my understanding, In time I may be able to help inoculate you all against light based attacks, this is all the information that I come bearing to you all today."

Orkanith bows

Pathaky wrote: Kabanha's eyes narrow in thought, and it glances across the table at the candlewax faces of the Spellcoat College.

"Yes. Such a weakness comes part and parcel with the forces we have embraced. But I think you're right. You may indeed be able to inoculate us. Spellcoats, your attention, if you please."

The three dozen bodies of the Spellcoat College filter across the table to Orkanith and Kabanha. Their eyes, melted open, shut, and inbetween with ropes of waxy, bloodless flesh, study the fallen angel. 'I Am The Hidden Death' speaks.

"It Bears A Power, Yes. A Lineage That Bears Promise, An Ascendant Ability. A Deed."

All three dozen robed figures bow slightly to Orkanith.

"We Would Record This Deed Upon Our Spellcoats. Gird Ourselves In It's Word. And Share This Gift, If Successful. Your Cooperation Would Be Highly Useful, But Is By No Means Necessary."

Armocida wrote: Orkanith angles himself so that he bows to the entire circle. "I shall do all I can to further the progress of The Circle. This is all that I wished to convey to you all. Before I take my place back with my master these as well may be of some assistance." Orkanith puts some of his ability tomes out on the table and takes his seat by Kabanha.

4 Book of Weaponry- (Permanent Consumable, Grimoire, Physical & Fire, 1 Charge, 10,000,000 Gold) Teaches user "Knowledge of Weapons"

Pathaky wrote: "Elementary Works, But Useful For Shoring Up Weaknesses", the Spellcoats murmur, thumbing through the works and passing them between their constituent bodies. Some of the books flare up and vanish, used by the College.

Talitha, Lamman, and a few of the bureaucrat's apprentices take the books too, learning from the grimoires.

Orkanith loses:

2 Book of 1,000 Treatments- (Permanent Consumable, Grimoire, Physical & Light, 1 Charge, 10,000,000 Gold) Teaches user "Doctor"
4 Book of Covert Techniques- (Permanent Consumable, Grimoire, Darkness & Air, 1 Charge, 10,000,000 Gold) Teaches user "Sneaky"

4 Book of Weaponry- (Permanent Consumable, Grimoire, Physical & Fire, 1 Charge, 10,000,000 Gold) Teaches user "Knowledge of Weapons"

The grimoires consumed, 'I Am The Hidden Death' returns its attention to Orkanith.

"I Will Proceed To Investigate Your Pattern, Then Seek To Isolate This Deed In Order To Attempt To Stitch It Into A Coat," it says. "Mentor Kabanha, You May Wish To Prepare Your Pupil. The Survival Rate Of Mana-Pattern Vivisection Is Lacking. While Apprentice Morthos Will Certainly, Thanks To His Unique Cosmic Position, Endure, It May Remove Him From Our Grasp Momentarily."

Kabanha grumbles but nods, piercing a finger with a tiger-claw on the opposite hand and squeezing out a single coin-sized drop of thick, black blood onto the table before passing his hand over it. It congeals into a coin bearing the rakshasha's face in profile.

"Hold this, pupil, and if this goes poorly, when you return through this Nexus Portal you shall be brought to my side. None of that nonsense with the portal hall and that odious city."

Orkanith gains:

छKabanha's Indrasena Portal Token- (Quest Item, Blood & Darkness, X Gold) Has RP effects. Has No Effect Outside of Indrasena-un-Sesamsara.

Then, the Spellcoat College surrounds him, right hands raised in mystic gestures, their eponymous Coats shimmering with energy, the stitched writing writhing across the fabric like so many calligraphic snakes.

Orkanith is scanned. His mana pattern is cataloged for the second time. The College is more precise and less brutal than Siddhi had been, but their attention feels cold, without an iota of real connection or emotion.

He feels his connection to the skillset of the Ascendant Traitor Argantannion swell, feverish as three dozen invisible mystic implements surround it and tease at it. A new coat is spun there, in the space between the Black Flame and the World, in this Paradise, gold, shining, radiant thread spelling, painfully slowly, across it, over and over and over again,

"I Am The Just Blade"

"I Am The Just Blade"

"I Am The Just Blade"

"I Am The Just Blade"

With each repetition, Orkanith feels his essence tugged painfully in all directions as they stitch the ability out of him and into the Circle. The pain mounts as he is vivisected, and his consciousness begins to fade. The last thing he sees is the faces of the Spellcoats, ghastly pale, staring down at him and the new Spellcoat in their possession.

---------------

Orkanith wakes up back in Nexus! He's pretty sure his token will allow him to regain Kabanha's company without difficulty, however.

(This is partially to allow for a chance to update stats, as this quest has been going on for a whiiiii-ile, and this gives me a chance to align all the thread timelines a bit more.)

Post Orkanith's updated stats in the new thread here (viewtopic.php?f=38&t=9424) to keep streams of rewards separate and trackable.
