Dulcinea de Montréal Goes To Clavia (and Marefore Too)!

"You KNOW that SPIRIT-FUCKING PONDSCUM?!" Beaky manages to blurt out after managing to somewhat-recover from the talking kitten-to-the-face incident. His tail under his oilskin coat is bristling with rage.
Willoughby further notices his mosslike fur is now shimmering with an odd interplay of purple-y, lavender-y hues, much like the moon up there everyone seems to be so worked up about.

Beaky seems to be getting pretty worked up, and not in a good way.

"Correction, sir; I know of him, from the many tales that have spread of his... activities in various places. Unfortunately, you are far from the only person to come out the worse from interacting with him. I would be happy to provide you with any aid I can to help you in this matter, but I expect experimental treatments would not be your forte, and I lack the skills necessary to provide a guaranteed result at present." Dulcinea sighs, but then perks up a bit after a clever thought. "I do have a great deal of money on hand due to overestimating the cost of real estate here in Marefore, are you aware of any potential spiritual treatments that would be effective but you currently lack the funds to acquire?"

Beaky snorts, the noise muffled by his tengu-mask.
"You think I haven't ALREADY tried asking around? At BEST, I get laughed out of whatever temple I go into. People don't just get TURNED INTO Aptim. All the priests who even bother listening for long enough think I'm some Aptim kid who wants to get permanently turned into a human, which is IMPOSSIBLE. Even Eji said it was as if I'd ALWAYS BEEN like this when he checked."

The masked Aptim is getting louder. Fortunately, the streets are still pretty empty, but it's beginning to attract some stares as Beaky gets more and more worked up.

"He DESTROYED MY LIFE, and KEPT ON DESTROYING IT EVEN AFTER THAT! I had to RUN AWAY FROM HOME! I couldn't see Dad EVER AGAIN! I couldn't see ELLA ever again, not like THIS--" his voice cracks. "I can't even SHOW MY FACE to MY OWN MOTHER! She thinks I'm JUST SOME RANDOM HOMELESS APTIM FISHERMAN!"

He's really working up a froth, now. The arms are out and flailing.

"And on top of THAT, NOW there's all these spirits that look JUST LIKE HIM turning up ALL OVER and causing PROBLEMS, and THEN some weird box shows up with a VOICE coming out of it telling me it 'had a gift for me' from that ABSOLUTE BOTTOM-FEEDING LUNATIC 'GENIE' OR WHATEVER THE HELL HE SAID HE WAS and now my body KEEPS CHANGING EVERY TIME THE MOONS DO! You people from beyond the gate BRING NOTHING BUT MISERY! LOOK WHAT YOU DID TO THE TOWN!"

He gestures at the actually-pretty-intact town of Marefore, although given everything Dulcinea and Ryuu have learned about it and its still-felt scars and absences, the point is pretty clear.

It's time for a Chefly Intervention! Beaky's got a lot to get off his chest and the middle of the busiest street in town (probably) isn't the best place for it.

Ryuutarou hands Beaky a Mulberry Fleff, and begins to talk.

"You know what, Beaky, you've been done dirty, real dirty, but shouting in the middle of the street about it is only going to get people looking at you even more funny than usual. I've been cleaning up Deb's Place to get it running again, why don't we go over there and you and Willoughby and I can have a meal and chat and try to figure out the best way to let everyone know about these poison fish while Dulcinea goes out to do some more cleaning up."

Ryuutarou is deploying the

Chef's Conflict-Calming Culinary Confrontation- (Technique Ability, Chef) Possessor may use 'Chef's Conflict-Calming Culinary Confrontation' in conjunction with a 'Use an Item' or 'Metacombine' action so long as no other technique is used and a Food consumable is used as part of said action, this action may be used as a pre-emptive counter to an offensive action that may only target the source of said offensive action (with all other hits from said Consumable being lost), if the Consumable is successfully used, there is a (Possessor's Level - Target's Level)% chance that the offensive action is cancelled and the action lost

in conjunction with his skills from the abilities Doctor, Psychologist, Psychiatrist, Therapist, Chef, and Bartender.

If Beaky accepts, Dulcinea will go looking for the Dockmaster, and if she doesn't find him, will go sailing into the blue in search of additional Atomic messes.

The sudden unexpected deployment of baked goods (backed with a certain special technique and a decent grasp of knowledge behind it) successfully derails Beaky's rant-in-progress and forces him through the power of Social Obligation (or perhaps more than a little self-consciousness) into a change of venue.
He still doesn't give off vibes that he likes or trusts the gang, but their professed disdain for Remalius and apparent desire to address the poisonous fish issue is doing a lot of heavy lifting, there.

The trio make their way to Deb's Place, where Glorbuk looks like he's managed to deal with disposing of the perished foodstuffs and unstacking the various tables and chairs. The floor's been mopped and cleaned, surfaces polished, and fresh chalk laid out near the boards ready for edits to the menus.

Beaky doesn't seem at all phased by the goblin. Maybe there's Aptim that look like them around?

Dulcinea, meanwhile, makes her way down to the dockside once more, and commences waiting.

And waiting.

And waiting.

Ding....she has more important things to do than this.

Stepping out onto the ocean once more, a new vessel spun from saltwater and sea spray rises to meet her foot, elegantly turning from the promenade to convey her out into the blue once more!

Tick. Tick. Tick.

Her Compass That Points Towards Atomic goes from flicking and spinning between points in town to circling and flicking between points out on the waves. The background levels of the element are definitely higher than they should be, out here, (which should be zero, considering the world itself didn't have Atomic until whatever caused the explosion that wiped out Marefore happened, and later the Emperor Moon getting it as a domain) and seem to have two more major concentrations that she can determine.

One looks to be vaguely in the direction of dark water and foaming whitecaps, with the occasional jut of rock being visible. The other is out towards a more-ordinarily-featureless stretch of water.

"Alright, now that we're a little more private, I'll start whipping something up for us to eat while you get your feelings out."

Ryuutarou uses Create Food (Lesser) to summon up some basic ramen ingredients, then uses Prep Ramen Quickly, Knowledge of the Best Ramen Recipes of the Decade, and Add an Egg! to give them all a basic but fundamentally excellent introduction to the wonders of Ramen!

While Beaky sits at the counter, Glorbuk is handed Willoughby, who meows very sadly and wiggles for head-scratches.

Dulcinea summons an entourage before setting sail to the rocky spot! Using the focus of All The Fishes You Will Meet, she brings forth Doctor Lobster, Master of Maritime Medicine, a Triton, and 2 Hippocampi.

"...what are you even HERE for? REALLY here for?"
Now out of the public and surrounded by people from Nexus, Beaky seems to be slipping back into anti-Nexan sentiment and paranoia.
"NONE of you people from beyond the gate do any good. All I've ever seen you do is pretend to be friendly until you get people to drop their guard, and then DESTROY SOMEONE'S LIFE. Or wreck a town and KILL most of the people in it. Or drive AROUND town throwing DEAD BODIES at people."

He's still wearing that mask, but from what Ryuu can tell from his tone or body language, he believes what he's saying.

She summons her squad, for she's on a mission! With both smile and rhyme, it's...

...it's a brown, eel-like fish in a doctor's coat with a somewhat-askew reflector-band on its head. Its pockets are filled with glass bottles with scribbled-over labels on them, and it's holding a medical diploma with suspicious white-out marks on it.

Dulcinea has summoned a Fishy Physician (Aquatic, Level 24). It can heal a bit, but can also provide fake healing, attacks disguised as non-offensive actions, buffs-that-are-actually-debuffs, debuffs that get worse over time, and beneficial effects that flip to negatives shortly after application that also provide negative status effects, mostly Poison and Diseased. It's fairly keyed to Illusion.

This may not be exactly what she was after.

"Well, Dulcinea and I decided to come out here for a couple reasons. First was to try and buy up some businesses that didn't have owners any more and hire some locals to work at them to try to keep the town's economy from collapsing. I like to think I'm a pretty good cook, so I'm trying to set the restaurants back up, while Dulcinea was taking on everything else."

Ryuutarou pours a pitcher of lemonade into a glass and hands it to Beaky, then pours another glass and sips from it himself.

"Second was actually to look into rumors about the fish around here. Dulcinea was probably planning to take care of that a few days ago, but she only just got out of a time loop she was stuck in from stopping Prier's Paradise from turning into another dungeon in the middle of town."

Does the Fishy Physician have any ways to cure minor and/or moderate negative status effects? If not, it will be dismissed and, depending on how far from shore she is when she arrives, will summon a Tanuki in its place.

Beaky takes the glass but doesn't drink, keeping his mask in place.
"Yeah, sure. Doing things JUST for the good of others. And what happens when you all get BORED? I've seen THAT play out already, more than once, and even the FIRST time was bad enough."

Ryuu's various psychological and therapy skills are pinging that there's more than one heavy subject causing this. Granted, finding out that he's the guy that Remalius Did That Thing To is certainly justification enough for bitterness and mistrust of Nexans. This seems to run even deeper than that, though.

He did mention in that passing rant back at the Flying Catfish about the terrible wrongs visited upon the town by other Nexans, and, now Ryuu thinks about it, seemed to be rather more emotionally invested in it than somebody would generally get over rumour or second-hand accounts...

...oh.

When did he first come to Marefore relative to that particular parade of disasters?
How close was he to the events in question?

The Fishy Physician assures Dulcinea that it does indeed have a way to cure minor and/or moderate negative status effects!
...a bit of prodding reveals it 'cures' them by instead shifting them to a different negative status effect on the same band, instead.

Probably not what she's looking for in a doctor.

"I mean, we were planning on making money from these businesses, not running them as a charity. Once we got everything off the ground and had some experienced workers, we were going to promote some managers to keep the businesses going when we were away... But I doubt you're particularly interested in the finer details of business management."

Ryuutarou sighs. "But so many things happened here in such quick succession that I don't actually know the true details of most of it, other than the town got blown up and then sort of fixed, badly. At least, I assume badly, I was under the impression that cities in Seirei don't tend to have dungeons inside of them..."

The Fishy Physician is somewhat acceptable!

When they reach the rocks, Dulcinea summons a Tanuki (who stays in the boat), another Triton, and 2 more Hippocampi, and then the Fishy Physician, 2 Tritons, and 4 Hippocampi accompany her beneath the waves to investigate!

Beaky barks out a short, humourless laugh.
"Yeah, 'badly'. 'Badly's ONE way of putting the RELENTLESS SHITSTORM you Nexans unleashed on us. First I get BETRAYED and turned into THIS-" he gestures at himself, "-so I have to LEAVE MY LIFE BEHIND and travel to the ONLY OTHER TOWN I know in a BODY THAT IS ALL WRONG. I'm barely there A FEW DAYS when that BASTARD, the Gold-Dust Killer, turns up and MURDERS HIS WAY THROUGH TOWN. And THEN he comes BACK, and DESTROYS EVERYTHING. Have you ever seen someone with THEIR SKIN MELTED OFF? Parts of them just TURNED TO ASH? Heard what it sounds like when that poison energy is COOKING THEM FROM THE INSIDE?"
Oh, yep, there's the hysterics.
"I was starting to GET TO KNOW people I'd actually be able to SHOW MY FACE TO here, and then suddenly THEY'RE ALL DEAD. HORRIBLY. And then that IDIOT FOX-THING comes back and decides to USE THE TOWN AS A TESTING GROUND for whatever the FUCK she did to TURN BACK TIME, except she couldn't even get THAT right, because half the people came back as EMPTY BODIES WITHOUT SOULS, and most of the OTHERS can only remember the night EVERYTHING GOT DESTROYED like it was a BAD DREAM. I only remember properly because I was out FISHING when I saw the town suddenly FIX ITSELF, and when I get back to see what happened, I see THAT FUCKING FOX-THING WAVING ONE OF MY FRIEND'S BODIES AROUND WHILST RIDING A FUCKING CHARIOT AROUND TOWN!"

Dulcinea is, thankfully, a Sailor! Combined with her helpful aquatic summon-friends, she successfully manages to avoid what turns out to be quite the significant number of hidden reefs that could have ended up sending her into the drink rather earlier than she would have liked.

Managing to moor her vessel more-or-less in place and avoid having it dash itself against the rocks, the Nightmare Scientist takes the plunge into the briny depths below!

It would appear there is indeed another chunk of radioactive something down there, judging by the atomic-green glow faintly visible from below.
Somewhat more concerning is the fact that said Atomic mana appears to be getting channeled up the spits and spires of rock rising from the depths around her. Things are already getting significantly radioactive, and if Dulcinea is any judge, leaving that thing here for much longer will probably end up eventually converting the whole reef into some sort of independently-radioactive area of terrible spreading Atomic mutation and cancer.

Whatever this particular thing was, it's impossible to tell. It looks like an ugly twisted, melted glob of various metals the size of her torso.

"That's quite the tale of woe you've got there, and no mistake. But sometimes, you just have to step back, do something about what you can change, and not worry about what you can't. When times like that come, I like to cook."

Dulcinea decides it is time to give it a quick scan for "sufficiently unalive to store in the presence of the GOLEMSTONE". If so, YOINK, and then perform follow up diagnostics to make sure the local rocks are no longer on the path to turning into an Atomic Reef.

"My PROBLEM is that all the things I can't change KEEP BARGING INTO MY LIFE and RUINING IT and KILLING PEOPLE. YOU try not worrying when THAT keeps happening. Even if I keep killing those PONDSCUM SPIRIT COPIES, I'm not going to be able to get strong enough to stop one of YOU people if you want to do it all over again!"

Willoughby feels things may be going in a slightly worrying direction. Of the muddle of sad and angry wishes he's got going on inside him that are his own, 'trying to kill anyone who comes into town from Nexus' might be a very real path he ends up taking if he continues on that train of thought.

Ryuu's getting a more straightforward psychological read on him. Beaky's feeling hurt, sad, angry and vulnerable, and the frankly shocking example apparently everyone from Nexus he knows of has set is only making things worse. The dragon-chef is fairly sure that his patience and calm approach are more-or-less helping ensure the teenage(?) Aptim(?) isn't just going to get up and storm out, but he feel he may have hit on a pivotal point of things: Beaky doesn't feel like he can do anything about anything, especially in the face of everything that's been happening.

Dulcinea scans the twisted, melted glob of metal!

She determines:

Radioactive Relic of Marefore Recrudescent (2)- (Accessory, Quest Item, Atomic & Time & Fate, 10,000,000 Gold) At the start of each round, a Zone of Atomic is created with an attached effect that causes all quantities of Atomic Damage dealt to individuals within it to be doubled (to a maximum of 1,000,000 additional damage), and all instances of Poison: Irradiated and Overload: Thermonuclear Meltdown applied against individuals within it to ignore the Resistances of individuals below level 60 who do not possess Atomic Resistance and Immunities of individuals below Level 60 who do not possess Atomic Immunity, with this effect stacking a maximum of 3 times across all instances of itself

Off into the Citadel it goes, never mind the sudden BLAST OF SHEER PRESENCE FROM AN ITEM SO UNKNOWABLY MORE POWERFUL THAT IT WOULD CRUSH ANY WHO GAZE UPON IT-- and the water-portal is closed.

Upon checking the rocky, reefy area now bereft of its radioactive resident, Dulcinea comes to the conclusion that it probably won't become an Atomic Reef, although the background levels of the element may take longer to fade than they otherwise should, here. Some set of environmental coincidences have formed and eroded the undersea area into a crude but effective geomantic focus for ambient elemental collection and channeling. Still, without the 'battery' there, the Atomic mana should dissipate into the sea, unraveling and breaking down into constituent elements. Maybe not as quickly as she'd like, given there's that one new Atomic moon out there, wasn't there? She thinks she remembers something about that during that [FRAME OF REFERENCE ERROR: SPACE/TIME/EXISTENCE NULL VALUE].

"Well, if it's power you're looking for, I've technically got a few options, but I don't expect you'll like them much. The first option is to follow us back to Nexus and become a member of the Battle Arena yourself. You'll have to restart from Level 1, but Battle Arena members have some of the highest flexibility and widest ranges of power sets of any known multiversal entities. This has a few issues though, mostly from the fact that sometimes people and things from other dimensions just can't go back through the Nexus Portal, and even if you can, it's not the fastest process."

Ryuutarou pauses for a bit, and takes a long pull from his glass of lemonade.

"Second option is faster and more guaranteed, but probably worse from your perspective. Arena members can take people who agree to it as their servants, granting them the ability to grow in power and skillsets much faster in return. They're typically not as powerful as a full Arena member, but getting you leveled up high enough would make you easily powerful enough to deal with most lower-to-mid-level Arena Members. Unfortunately for you, Kit is one of the ones at the higher end, so that's probably not the path you want to go down if you think you'd need to be able to challenge her."

"Third option is the fastest, but least controlled, and the most likely to have... unfortunate side-effects, like what you have already experienced. That is, simply channeling raw experience into you until it turns into additional power. I honestly wouldn't want to even try this myself, and Dulcinea probably wouldn't want to do it either, given what's already happened to you."

"Finally, there's the slowest and probably most difficult path, but you'd keep the most freedom. If you join our Guild, we can take you on Quests to increase your power faster than training on your own would, and in return you'd be responsible for watching over this stretch of coast for any problems, like poisonous fish or piracy or whatnot, and then letting us know to come over and see about resolving the issue if you don't think it's safe to handle it yourself. We'd pay you, of course, and you'd be allowed to live in any Guild Property in Marefore that you thought was suitable, or we could buy a house for you and then transfer the deed to you if you preferred."

Dulcinea, noting that the area has formed into a geomantic mana-collector, wonders if she can alter it such that, rather than collecting and infusing Atomic mana into the local environment, it instead acts as a filter to break down Atomic mana even faster.

Dulcinea has Geomancer, Scientist, Apprentice Channeler, Heir to the Future, and Apprentice Energy Synchronization to aid her in this task!

Ryuutarou lays out potential options, in the hope of giving Beaky hope of regaining some semblance of control over things!

Most of them aren't well-received.
"I don't want to end up becoming one of YOU lot, if there's MORE of the Gold-Dust Killer and the fox-thing beyond the Gate! And there's no WAY I'm going to become anyone's servant, OR let ANYTHING like what happened to me before happen again!"
The cat-satyr-Aptim boy shudders, then considers the final option.
"...What ELSE would you make me do if I joined this Guild of yours? I'm not going to go around KILLING people or WRECKING the town."

WIlloughby gets the impression his wishes and dreams are skewing more towards "take advantage of these crazy Gate-people to gain power to protect my town from the other crazy Gate-people", which is... maybe good enough? He really needs to learn to tell the difference between crazy Gate-people and not-crazy Gate-people. But then again Dulcinea does have peculiar mannerisms for a two-legs. And the cat-not-cat-thing seems to have only been experiencing crazy Gate-people so far. Maybe it's like being sprayed with a water bottle, or the Dreaded Vacuum. A couple of bad experiences, and even the sight or thought of them becomes scary!

Dulcinea puts on her metaphorical thinking cap (after a brief mental detour considering the benefits of a hat containing an external brain or three for extra thinking-power, and the design and logistics thereof), and comes to the conclusion that yes, she should be able to alter the reef to break down the Atomic mana collected within itself faster. It would take a while, and she'd have to make do with the tools she has to hand (or borrow the Triton's trident as a makeshift chisel, or summon up more helpful Aquatics) to alter the rocks, but the principles are sound. Probably.

Alternatively, another thought occurs to her.

It's not like anyone's using this reef, and the Citadel can absorb properties...

"No, no ruining the town, it's where we have our stuff, we wouldn't want to ruin our own stuff or the stuff of potential customers. Plus, it's very hard to make money from a business if the business is blown up and all the customers are dead. As for killing anything, that would be your own decision? I mean, we certainly don't want to attack anyone in town, but there might be criminals, or pirates, or nasty sea-beasts or something that won't just go away if you beat it up some or send the guards after them. I'm not entirely certain what the local laws on that sort of thing are, but if you end up in a situation where either you die or whatever is trying to kill you dies, I'd rather you be the one who makes it out the other side."

Willoughby shuffles down the bar and tries to look exceedingly pettable to contribute to the calming process.

Dulcinea congratulates herself for this most excellent thought! She is the best at coming up with good ideas! How wonderful!

She readies the Citadel of the Fisherman, and prepares to absorb-scan the Reef into it!

Beaky seems to consider this for a long while as the potential for gaining power and protecting the town from the depredations of Nexans wars with the issue of working for Nexans to advance their own interests. Condensation beads on the glass of lemonade, flowing down the sides to create a small pool around it.

Ryuu hears Glorbuk mutter something unkind about coasters under his breath.

"...well, SOMEBODY has to keep an eye on things to make sure you aren't trying to sell things that will EXPLODE THE TOWN AGAIN, or something," Beaky finally reasons.

Is that a yes? It's probably a yes.

It truly is convenient, having a handy way to remove inconvenient terrain features that can be carried around in your soul. Truly, it's amazing the storage capacity one has! Perhaps Nightmare Science could develop further inroads into the topic of soul-warehouses.
As in, souls that are or contain warehouses, not warehouses full of souls. That's almost certainly a thing, given the weapon type and the array of entities both within Nexus and without capable of interacting with such otherwise-intagible, immortal quantities.

She's getting distracted again.

Calling upon the power of the Citadel of the Fisherman, Dulcinea absorbs the reef into her artifact!

Willoughby responds to this by asking for fish.

Glorbuk sighs, and goes looking for a dish and a rag to clean off the bar.

Mission: Stage 2: Complete!

Time to go find the next chunk of Atomic Nonsense! Dulcinea returns to her boat, and goes sailing in the direction indicated by her Compass!

Beaky pauses.
"Wait, that's it? No weird rituals or CURSES or anything?"

That is indeed it.

The Grand Fraternal Order and Wondrous Guild of the Fishermen of the Citadel gains Finn Fein (Human & Spirit, Level 28) to their roster! He'll likely be parked in Seirei doing things on this side for the forseeable future, unless things happen. Which they very well might.

Glorbuk grumbles as he sets about getting the wet rings off the newly-cleaned counter. He seems to briefly ponder the use of the nearby kitten as a closer alternative to a rag, but wisely decides against it.

Dulcinea swims her way back up the now significantly-less-rock-filled waters to the surface, the shifting seabed and inflow of water making a distorted bell-like tone behind her as the space rearranges itself.

Her vessel has drifted a little. She had, after all, anchored it to one of the taller rock spires poking out of the ocean. The Tanuki doesn't seem to be too put out by this, at least.

Consulting her compass, it seems that beyond a vague presence of Atomic in her immediate vicinity, there is only one strong signal left (once she eliminates the direction Marefore lies in).
Her short voyage leads her to a featureless patch of ocean. From her experience as a sailor and Lord Fisherman, if she had to guess she'd say this patch is rather considerably deeper than the other two areas she found Atomic Nonsense in.

Dulcinea goes diving once more, though she pays a bit closer attention to how deep she's going in case water pressure might become an issue. Her aquatic summons are most likely to be fine, but she'll ask them to warn her if they go too deep.
